WASH

CBI’s focus on bringing clean water, dignified sanitation and effective hygiene practices to communities, schools and healthcare facilities is fueled by a strong conviction that Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) are essentials for children and their families to live healthy, prosperous lives. Since 2019 CBI has reached over 100,000 community members in the Northeast and Northwest with WASH services. However, there is still work to be done. In line with Sustainable Development Goal 6, CBI’s commitment is to ensure clean water sanitation and hygiene for everyone, everywhere we work, by 2030.

CBI’s WASH programs are comprehensive, aiming to provide sustainable solutions to water scarcity, improve sanitation facilities, and promote hygiene practices. These programs are crucial in preventing waterborne diseases, reducing mortality rates, and enhancing the overall quality of life for the communities they serve. Our approach integrates community involvement, capacity building, and partnerships to ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of its interventions.

Our key WASH Services include:

  • Provision of Safe Water
CBI focuses on increasing access to safe and clean drinking water. We achieve this through the construction and rehabilitation of water points, boreholes, and wells. By ensuring that communities have reliable sources of potable water, we help to reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid.
  • Improvement of Sanitation Facilities
To address the issue of inadequate sanitation, CBI constructs and renovates latrines and toilets in schools, health centers, and communities. These efforts aim to reduce open defecation, which is a major public health concern. Improved sanitation facilities also contribute to better school attendance, especially for girls, and overall community health.
  • Promotion of Hygiene Practices
Hygiene education is a critical component of CBI’s WASH programs. Through community outreach and awareness campaigns, CBI promotes practices such as hand-washing with soap, safe water storage, and proper waste disposal. These activities are designed to empower communities with the knowledge and habits necessary to maintain hygiene and prevent disease.
  • Community Engagement and Capacity Building
CBI involves community members in the planning, implementation, and maintenance of WASH projects. We create and train Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Committees (WASHComs), ensuring that communities can sustain and manage their WASH facilities independently. This participatory approach fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among community members.
  • Emergency WASH Interventions
In response to humanitarian crises, such as conflicts and natural disasters, CBI implements emergency WASH interventions to provide immediate relief. This includes the distribution of hygiene kits, construction of temporary sanitation facilities, and provision of safe drinking water to displaced populations and affected communities.

Some of our projects in the WASH sector

CBI’s WASH programs have significantly impacted the health and well-being of numerous communities in Nigeria’s North-East and North-West regions. Some of our projects in the WASH sector include;

  • Clean Water Initiative in Borno State
This project involved the drilling of 50 boreholes in rural communities affected by conflict. By providing a reliable source of clean water, the initiative benefited over 25,000 individuals, reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases and improving health conditions. Some of our projects in the WASH sector
  • Sanitation Improvement in Yobe State
CBI constructed 200 latrines in schools and health centers, significantly enhancing sanitation facilities. This project not only improved hygiene standards but also increased school attendance rates, particularly for female students who previously lacked access to safe sanitation facilities.
  • Hygiene Promotion Campaign in Kano State
Through extensive community outreach, CBI educated over 10,000 households on the importance of handwashing, safe water storage, and proper waste disposal. This campaign led to a marked improvement in hygiene practices and a reduction in disease outbreaks.
  • Emergency WASH Response in Adamawa State
In response to a cholera outbreak, CBI deployed emergency WASH interventions, including the distribution of 5,000 hygiene kits and the establishment of temporary sanitation facilities. These efforts helped contain the outbreak and provided critical support to affected communities.

Over the years CBI has contributed significantly to the WASH sector in the Northeast and Northwest. CBI remains dedicated to expanding and improving its WASH programs to reach more communities and achieve greater impact.
