At Care Best Initiative, our Food Security and Livelihood (FSL) program has been a core part of our operations since 2019. Our primary goal is to improve vulnerable households’ access to food and income by building their resilience to shocks. We’ve made significant progress, reaching over 10,000 community members across Northeast and Northwest Nigeria.
Our approach to FSL is multifaceted. We provide agricultural support, including seeds and tools to farmers, offer training in improved farming techniques, and support small-scale livestock rearing. These activities not only enhance food production but also create income-generating opportunities for households. We have also responded to immediate needs as well. In 2020, we conducted a General Food Distribution in Gubio Camp, reaching about 1,000 individuals with raw food materials. This demonstrates our capacity to provide swift assistance in emergency situations, particularly in IDP camps.
However, our work extends beyond emergency response. We focus on long-term strategies for sustainable food security. This includes supporting local food systems, enhancing market access for small-scale producers, and promoting climate-smart agriculture practices to build resilience against environmental shocks.
We integrate our FSL work with other program areas like nutrition and health. For instance, we promote the cultivation of nutrient-rich crops to address malnutrition while simultaneously improving food security. This reflects our holistic approach to addressing community needs. Women empowerment is a key aspect of our FSL programming. We recognize the crucial role women play in ensuring household food security and nutrition, and we have specific initiatives targeting women farmers and female-headed households.
Our FSL programs aim to reduce dependency on external aid over time. We support the development of community-based savings groups, provide vocational training, and facilitate access to microfinance opportunities to help households diversify their income sources.
Through these comprehensive efforts, we’re working to create more food-secure and economically resilient communities across Northern Nigeria. It’s challenging work, but the positive changes we see in the lives of the people we serve make it all worthwhile.
