1.4 Million Dreams on Hold, Will You Help Restart Them?
Conflict and crisis have shut the doors to education for children in Northeast Nigeria. Your support can open them again.
For 12-year-old Goni Mustapha, school was a distant reality. His village in Borno State was attacked 6 years ago. Schools were burnt, teachers fled. The entire village was rendered empty. Worse still, Mustapha lost one of his legs amid the crisis.
Since then, Mustapha has spent his days in makeshift shelters at the Gongulong IDP camp in Maiduguri. Having been rendered a PWD by crisis, he was subjected to petty household chores. He and other children who have suffered similar fates roamed the camp, day to day — out of school, out of options, out of time.
Mustapha is just one of 1.4 million children in Northeast Nigeria currently in desperate need of access to education.
Conflict has torn through the BAY (Borno, Adamawa, Yobe) states, destroying schools, displacing 2 million children, and instilling fear with every kidnapping and abduction from schools. Today, 60% of internally displaced children in camps have no access to school. Meanwhile, host communities are overwhelmed, with crowded classrooms, dilapidated structures and limited resources.
These are more than mere numbers. They are tales of stolen childhoods, bleak futures and a threat to us all.
But there is hope.
How are we making a difference?
Over the past half-a-decade, CBI has launched several Education initiatives, to re-enroll out-of-school children and restore hope for many. In 2024 alone, we launched a bold effort to rewrite this story, reaching 1,634 individuals with dignity, safety, and a path forward.
Mustapha's Journey Back to School
Mustapha, alongside 828 children aged 3–17 was returned to classrooms.
How STEM Clubs Are Shaping Young Thinkers
Beyond teaching, we established STEM clubs in four schools, igniting the curiosity of 130 students in science, technology, engineering, and math.
Through our Back-to-School campaigns, hundreds of out-of-school children were re-enrolled.
Adopting a holistic approach to tackling education issues in Northeast Nigeria, we also engaged 504 caregivers and 22 community leaders in critical conversations that changed mindsets and challenged taboos around early education.
40 teachers received hands-on training in digital tools, innovative methods, and mother-tongue instruction giving children the skills to read, count, and dream again.
We distributed textbooks, uniforms, and essential supplies to flood-affected students, ensuring that a natural disaster didn’t become an educational one.
But We’re Just Getting Started
In 2025, we are scaling up, and we need your help. Our goal is to reach 300,000 people across eight states in Nigeria with education services that are inclusive, trauma-informed, and community-driven. To do this, we’re mobilizing $1.2 million.
